Day 1

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls: Essays, Etc. by David Sedaris

100 Words (on what I'm thinking): Decided to give blogging a chance to help trigger more reading. Some might remember my old blog project, 55pages. I decided to reduce that goal, because 55 pages can be a burden. 30 pages is more realistic for my current reading strength. Computers and cell phones seem to have really sapped my ability to read, so I'm lowering the bar to where I am now. I have a house full of books I haven't read, so I want to force myself to read. David Sedaris is a great place to start because he's funny and easy to read. Saw him live and he was fantastic.

Summary: This book is a collection of short pieces, mostly stories about himself, which Sedaris sort of specializes in.
-"Dentists without Borders" was about his trips to different dentists while living in France. Different personalities, different approaches to patients, all pretty funny.
-"Attaboy" was less funny, to me anyway. The story is about a kid defacing a mailbox with a sharpie and Sedaris reflecting on his childhood and how his parents would have responded to him doing something similar.
-"Think Differenter" - I found this "story" to be hilarious.  It is all over the place. Almost stream of thought. If you asked me what its about, I'd say getting older and forgetting things, but that's too simple. It's also about not changing as you age. Maybe that's the appeal: I'm getting old.
"Memory Laps" - Only three pages into this one. It's about swimming so far.

Quote: "Hey, she said, enough with the flossing. You have better ways to spend your evenings."
