Day 3
Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls: Essays, Etc. by David Sedaris
100 Words: A friend of mine, who I work with on a project, was texting with me today. We batted around some ideas, some big, some small, mostly day dreaming, before talking about what we were doing. He was bathing his kids, how he texted I'm not sure, while I was reading this part of my book. When I mentioned this blog, I shot him a link so he could look at it. He texted back, I'm not sure how you have time for all this. And I really don't. I can't tell you how 30 pages stretches me when I have other things going on, but we're doing this!
Summary: Finished "Loggerheads" today. It's about some sea turtles that young David finds on the beach. He takes them home and they eventually die, which is depressing, but this is Sedaris, so that should be expected (and I'm not complaining here). His work reminds me of David Bazan, lead singer of the Pedro the Lion, even the music that isn't depressing has a particular feel to it. "If I ruled the world" is a four pager. It's from the perspective of a self-righteous woman who has Jesus destroy
everyone and everything she hates. It's odd. Almost doesn't fit in with the rest of the book. The final story I read today was "Easy Tiger" and I loved it. David talks about learning other languages to travel and uses it to discuss the differences between Japan, Germany, and the United States. Really great stuff and very funny.
Quote: "And a line that might have been written especially for me, 'Don't worry, I'll do it myself.'"
